Why Is My Floor Squeaking?
4 Problems That May Cause Squeaking
Something Is Moving
Squeaks indicate that the floor is moving somewhere. Walk around your space to identify whether the noises are concentrated in one or two areas or spread across the floor.
Once you discover where it is moving, you can solve this problem by adding fasteners above or below the floor to stabilize it again.
Is Your Humidifier Running?
Sqqueaks are a normal part of hardwood floors. But make sure the humidity level is between 35% to 55%. Gaps are also signs of decreasing humidity levels and if the problem persists for more than one season, contact our professionals to know what you need to do!
The Weather Has Changed
If during the change of seasons you notice some squeaks in your floors, this is a good reminder to regulate the humidity in your space with a humidifier. In the depths of winter, floors will be naturally drier, causing gaps to shrink and movement in hardwood floors. Therefore, maintain the humidity level between 35-55% to avoid squeaking and in summer use a dehumidifier so that the floor does not swell.
Workplace Inspection
Most squeaks can be prevented with a workplace inspection, and our advice is that you consult the installation guidelines from your manufacturer and the National Wood Flooring Association. For nailed floors, the use of fasteners and adhesives can help prevent squeaking.
Here are some causes that may be related to your workplace:
- Subfloor not level
- Gaps between the subfloor and floor
- Inadequate fasteners for nailing the floor
- Incorrect spacing
